What 5 Axis Laser Cutting can offer you

5-Axis Laser Cutting uses a high-powered, focused laser beam in combination with full five-axis machine motion to cut precise profiles across flat sheet, tube, and complex three-dimensional formed components. Our machines are equipped with 3 kW laser sources, delivering the power needed to cut a wide range of materials cleanly and efficiently — from thin aerospace sheet to heavier structural sections — while maintaining the tight tolerances and edge quality demanded by our customers.

Unlike mechanical cutting or sawing, there is no tool contact with the workpiece. There is no tool wear, no cutting force, and no risk of distortion from clamping loads. The focused laser beam removes material through a combination of melting, burning and vaporisation, with an assist gas delivered coaxially through the cutting head to eject molten material from the kerf and protect the cut surface. The choice of assist gas is critical and is selected specifically for each material: we use argon for titanium to prevent oxidation and maintain material integrity; nitrogen for stainless steel to produce clean, oxide-free edges suitable for welding or direct use; and oxygen for mild steel, where the exothermic reaction accelerates the cut and improves efficiency on thicker sections.

With full five-axis motion, our laser cutting capability extends far beyond flat sheet. Tubes, formed brackets, fabricated assemblies and complex profiled components can all be processed with cuts applied at precise compound angles across curved and contoured surfaces — all in a single setup without re-fixturing. This is particularly valuable in aerospace and motorsport applications where lightweight tubular structures require accurately positioned slots, holes and profiled ends.

Profile tolerances of ±0.05 mm are achievable across parts up to 3000 mm in profile length, with programming handled entirely in-house from customer DXF, STEP or IGES data. The combination of speed, flexibility and accuracy makes 5-Axis Laser Cutting equally suited to one-off prototype work and high-volume production runs.

At Electro Discharge Ltd, our laser cutting operations are fully supported by in-house CAD/CAM programming and inspection, and are carried out within our AS9100 Rev D accredited quality management system. Whether you need a single prototype cut or a high-volume production batch, we offer the same standard of accuracy, documentation and on-time delivery.
